Children to get up close with local prehistoric giants at Cobb+Co Museum

19 December 2014

Prehistoric creatures that roamed the Darling Downs are coming to Cobb+Co Museum these school holidays.

Cobb+Co Museum Director Deborah Bailey said the Unearthed holiday program will give children the chance to get up close with megafauna, the giant animals that roamed the Darling Downs long after dinosaurs died out.

“The Darling Downs is significant for the sheer quantity of megafauna fossils found and, in fact, continuing to be found in this region”, Deborah said.

“In 2011 the flooding of Gowrie Creek revealed the skull of a large male Diprotodon, a 2m high 2,000kg marsupial that lived in this region 30-40 thousand years ago, but smaller remains are being found all the time.”

Science Minister Ian Walker said Unearthed would give the children the chance to learn more about these fascinating animals while having the chance to find their own fossils.

“Through the Unearthed holiday program, children will discover more about this fascinating part of our history, and learn how to find and identify real fossils.

“Every child who attends Unearthed at Cobb+Co Museum will receive a bag of Darling Downs dirt, guaranteed to contain a fragment of megafauna.”

Museum staff and volunteers have spent time sieving soil from just outside Toowoomba under the guidance of amateur palaeontologist Ian Sobbe, and have uncovered fragments of megafauna bone, teeth and  even found a jawbone.

“Ian Sobbe will be sharing his passion for megafauna in the Fossil Discovery Lab, plus there will be a live show, a trail and a life-size mystery visitor,” Deborah said.

Unearthed runs on weekdays from 5-23 January 2015 at Cobb+Co Museum, Toowoomba. Cost is $10 per child, which includes a Junior Palaeontology Activity Pack and entry to one live show featuring Ian Sobbe. Drop in activities are 10am-3pm and live shows are 10am, 11.30am and 1pm.

Unearthed at Twilight is a special evening version of the holiday program on Friday 9 January, 5pm-7pm.
