Explosive fun for the whole family at Science Magic holiday program

30 March 2015

Cobb+Co Museum’s popular Science Magic holiday program returns during the April school holidays with the theme ‘Don’t Do This At Home’.

Museum Director Deborah Bailey said there will be plenty to impress young (and not so young) visitors to the Museum.

“There will be flames, fireworks, chemical reactions, exploding custard and more during the live shows presented by our education team” Ms Bailey said.

“There will also be activities throughout the Museum and hands on experiments that children can definitely do at home, such as making their own lava lamp and helping to build an erupting volcano.

“As with all our holiday programs, we ensure there is a strong educational component mixed in with the fun and this year we have partnered with the University of Southern Queensland in preparing the program.

“We are pleased to have Dr Eliza Whiteside, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science at USQ, facilitating some of the experiments in the Museum’s Inquiry Centre on Thursday and Friday mornings in the first week and Tuesday morning in the second week. Dr Whiteside will explain the principles behind why certain chemical reactions happen. She will also present a talk on careers in science at the Science Magic at Twilight Show. ”

USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the University has partnered with Cobb + Co Museum for a number of years now and is proud to support the range of interesting educational opportunities offered at the Museum.

“Science and innovation is key to our future, and this is an opportunity for children to really engage in a hands-on and interactive activity, learn more about the world they live in, and have fun in the process!”, Professor Thomas said.

Science Magic runs on weekdays from 7 – 17 April 2015 at Cobb+Co Museum, Toowoomba. Cost is $10 per child, which includes a Science Magic activity book, hands on experiments and entry to one live show. Drop-in activities are 10am-3pm and live shows are 10am, 11.30am and 1pm.

Science Magic at Twilight is a special evening version of the holiday program on Wednesday 15 April, 4.30pm-7pm.
