Hands on school holiday fun (and learning) at Cobb+Co Museum

26 May 2015

Cobb+Co Museum’s fun school holidays program includes towering LEGO brick constructions, jousting robots, giant straw bridges, hand made drums, and fiery blacksmithing forges. …Just don’t tell the kids they might learn something too!

Museum Director Deborah Bailey said the hands on activities include Under Construction for primary school age children as well as four different Teen Workshops.

“As with all our holiday programs we combine fun and learning, so parents and children alike are happy”, Deborah said.

“Under Construction encourages children to use their own imagination and make their own creations using LEGO bricks and other materials, while also teaching them basic design principles.

“During the live show, children learn how to design and build the strongest and tallest structures, and see how to make and program robots made from LEGO bricks.

“Through our collaboration with the University of Southern Queensland, there are daily demonstrations from engineering experts and members of the Robogals, showing what can be achieved when you add science and technology to the mix.”

At the other end of the Museum, teenagers have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and create something beautiful from raw materials.

“The three hour Teen Workshops in traditional skills and trades were designed especially for 13-17 year olds to give them the thrill of making something by hand”, Deborah said.

“Teaching these skills also helps to ensure the knowledge is not lost into the future, and may well inspire a future career in blacksmithing or jewellery making – we have students that return every holidays to make something new”.

Under Construction runs 10am-3pm Monday 29 June – Friday 10 July (weekdays only). Cost is $10 per child and bookings are not required.

The three hour Teen Workshops cost $75 per person and bookings are essential. Workshops are available in Musical Instruments (to make and play a cajon drum) on Thursday 2 July, Resin Jewellery on Friday 3 July, Blacksmithing on Thursday 9 July and Aluminium Jewellery on Friday 10 July.
