Fascinating stories from a lifetime behind the lens at Cobb+Co Museum
26 August 2015
From high speed car chases to tagging tiger sharks, acclaimed Toowoomba cameraman Peter Collins ACS has seen it all.
At Cobb+Co Museum’s next Curator Conversation on Wednesday 2 September at 2pm, Peter will be sharing stories from a career that has spanned four decades and taken him all over the world.
“I have interviewed a lot of royals in my time, including Prince Andrew, Prince Phillip and Prince Harry”, Peter said.
“I did such a good job interviewing Prince Phillip that I was invited to interview the Queen when she came to Brisbane a few years ago –no camera man has ever interviewed the Queen before.”
Peter was even in the right place at the right time to interview a US President.
“I was part of a media call for then US President Bill Clinton when the reporter who was supposed to him went out for a quick smoke.Security wouldn’t let him back in, so when Bill was asked if I could interview him he said ‘yes’.”
Peter’s career started in Toowoomba when he joined DDQ Channel 10 in the late 1970s as an assistant accountant.
“I went down to newsroom to give everyone their pays and decided I wanted to learn to be a cameraman”, explains Peter.
“I went in on weekends, helped out with stories and held the microphone, but was never allowed to hold the camera. I did this for 18 months until one day I was called in to do a job, and that was it.”
Peter’s work has always brought him back to the region he loves and he has been instrumental in recording a slice of our community’s life and times.
During the 2011 floods in Grantham, Peter was the first cameraman on the scene and stayed with the community throughout, sleeping in his car.
“I met some incredible people and it was a privilege to be able to share their stories – in the end I did over 180 interviews.”
Join Peter as he shares some of his most exciting, humorous and rewarding experiences writing, shooting and editing his own news stories from the late 1970s to now.
