Feature Artisan knits her way to creative fulfilment
08 September 2015
Every tea cosy that Mary Reilly knits is unique, from the colours she uses to the detailed embellishments that adorn each one.
As Cobb+Co Museum’s upcoming Feature Artisan, Mary’s delightful tea cosies will be brightening up the Museum Shop from Saturday 12 September.
“I knit tea cosies because they are such happy things – if you’re having a bad morning you can look at your tea cosy and feel happy,” explains Mary.
“I started knitting with my mum and aunt when I was 10, but it was only when I left work a few years ago that I started making tea cosies.
“A friend was having a tea pot exhibition in the Potters Gallery in Toowoomba so I agreed to make a matching tea cosy for each one. I sold them all and started getting orders for more.”
Mary’s work has won numerous awards, including the knitting category of the first World Tea Cosy Making Competition, held in Miles in 2012,but it is the personal satisfaction that drives her creations.
“Knitting is something I do for myself, I just love it, and I like the fact that you can see the finished product fairly quickly,” explains Mary.
Though some tea cosies take longer to make than others, from 6 hours to 2 weeks, depending on the intricacy of the design.
“I once made a tea cosy for a 30-cup tea pot, the biggest tea pot I’ve ever seen”, said Mary.
“The cosy turned out beautifully, with dirt, grass, flowers, and sky at the top, but it took ages – I’m never going to sell that one.”
If you would like to purchase one of Mary’s hand knitted tea cosies, they are available in the Cobb+Co Museum Shop from Saturday 12 September until Sunday 11 October, or until sold out.
Mary will be demonstrating her craft in the Museum on Saturday 12 September, 11am - 2pm, and is available to help with any knitting dilemmas that visitors bring along.
