Curator Conversation

Presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 2pm

Curator Conversation is a series of entertaining talks hosted by Queensland Museum Curator Jeff Powell.

When: Wednesday 1 August 2018, 2pm

Theme: Rob Shiels, Collection Manager at The Workshops Rail Museum will present:
The Queensland Railway Department during the First World War. The railways were one of the state’s largest employers and the War created huge demands but at the same time drained skilled staff and revenue. Yet through this adversity, Queensland Railways supported their railway brothers who enlisted to fight.

The Queensland Railway Department provided specialised trains that were sent to regional areas to make it easier for local men to enlist.  Each of the trains were fitted out as a mobile recruiting depot consisting of two politicians (for giving speeches), a representative of the recruitment committee, a Defence Department doctor and a recruiting sergeant. Local Mayors were expected to drum up crowds and local schools were given a holiday on the day the train arrived.

Bookings not required - just turn up.
