Spring Cart c1880

Description

This two-wheeled delivery vehicle has a single moveable bench seat with backrest, and a step, which was somewhat unusual on a spring cart. It has semi-elliptical springs, and panelled sides with standards and scalloped edges.

Colour

Body and undercarriage are green with elaborate red and beige lining and scroll work.

History

Spring carts were found on every farm. Others could be seen congregated around fruit markets and or used in narrow town streets as general delivery vehicles. The more elaborate carts such as this one were commonly used in towns.

This spring cart, owned by Mr M. Smith of Pinkenbah, carried farm produce from Myrtletown to the Brisbane Markets. It was painted by Alex Hamilton.
