Hear and share memories of RM Williams at storytelling evening at Cobb+Co Museum

28 May 2015

RM Williams, the bushman, businessman, raconteur and author, is an outback legend, but he was also a teacher, mentor, family man and friend.

Cobb+Co Museum’s Storytelling…My Memories of RM on Wednesday 3 June is a chance for visitors to hear some of the personal stories and memories of RM from those who knew him well.

Close friend of RM and his personal photographer, David Seeto, will be sharing some of the many experiences they shared together.

“It was a privilege to spend the many hours with RM at his property”, David said.

“Discussions on my visits ranged from dreams, visions, projects, people, politics, poetry, publications to persistence in life.”

Leatherplaiting champion Bill Webb will speak about his time perfecting the prized bush skill under the direction of RM, during his teenage years.

“RM Williams lived 80 kilometres up the road from us and he taught me.RM was a good plaiter, but he knew people who were better, so he encouraged me to learn from them and to keep the art form going,” said Bill.

“Then in the 1990’s he started his own plaiting school at Hodgson Vale, so I used to run those for him. He had four or five tutors and people would come from all over Australia to come to his leather plaiting schools.”

The evening is hosted by David Iliffe from ABC Southern Queensland, who will encourage contributions from the audience. If you have a memory to share, go along and tell your story.
