Curator Conversation

Presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 2pm

Curator Conversation is a series of entertaining talks hosted by Queensland Museum Curator Jeff Powell.

When: Wednesday 5 September 2018, 2pm

Theme: Peter Cullen, Toowoomba Historian will present: Toowoomba Gardens – Then and Now

Poet George Essex Evans called this area The Garden of Queensland – how right he was. To the indigenous for over 60,000 years it was a ready source of food just for the taking. In the 1840s the natural grasses provided fodder for the flocks and herds of the squatters who introduced familiar fruits and vegetables for their own use. Urbanisation intensified this and we now have private and public gardens with native and exotic trees, shrubs and flowers for our appreciation. Toowoomba even has a carnival devoted to the appreciation of the latter with gardens normally private thrown open to the public. How this came about provides some interesting history.

Bookings not required - just turn up.
