Theme: Professor Maurice French will present: Squatters and Separation: Queensland Independence. 

In this talk Professor Maurice French will examine the role that the Darling Downs squatters played in the separation of pastoral Queensland from a democratizing NSW; the subsequent demands for the further separation of central and northern Queensland from a Brisbane parliament controlled by the 'Pure Merinos' of the Darling Downs; the 'bad press' that historians have generally accorded the squatters; and the role squatters played in the advance of agriculture.
